Wakefield Park
Let's Get The Ball Rolling!
Wakefield Park is a joint initiative between the Wellington City Council and Island Bay United AFC's Senior and Junior Clubs, in an attempt to get more benefit out of Wakefield Park for the future recreation of everyone within the Wellington Region.
About
Wakefield Park is currently covered in grass (well, a little bit), sitting on two levels, and configured into two football fields on each level.
It is used mainly by Island Bay United AFC, Brooklyn Northern United AFC, Olympic AFC, Island Bay Softball Club, Cricket, and also frequently used by the public.
While orientated in particular towards football in Wellington South, our vision benefits everyone and anyone frustrated by a shortage of suitable outdoor facilities due to to poor weather and/or overcrowding in the ENTIRE Wellington Region.
The WCC are in favour of the sports hub concept & can see themselves (together with some funding organisations) providing the artificial surfaces, the changing facilities& additional area enhancements, but are expecting the club & others to fund the pavilion which has initial estimates of $2 Million.
We have already had meetings with other possible partners or pavilion user groups, but would like to hear from more. Franchises Team Wellington, and Wellington Phoenix FC have expressed interest in using the facilities should they arrive.
We have some funding from the WCC to pursue further study in the implications of such a development, including the consultation process. The benefits of realizing this goal are huge in regard to a quality surface for training & playing, great potential to host tournaments (local & national) & very few cancellations.

Three Stages are proposed to spread the cost, while getting these pitches in as soon as possible.
- Artificial pitches & night lights on Grounds 1 & 2
- New pavilion to cope with the demands of longer & more frequent usage and also player expectations.
- Artificial pitches on Grounds 3 & 4.

Our Goals
3 full size and 1 or 2 Junior artificial football pitches (depends on size)
Relocate changing rooms & clubrooms between upper & lower pitches
Provide additional off street parking
Facilitate disabled access
Perimeter walking/exercise track for public use
Add fitness exercise equipment stations
