Wakefield Park
Let's Get The Ball Rolling!
Wakefield Park is a joint initiative between the Wellington City Council and Island Bay United AFC's Senior and Junior Clubs, in an attempt to get more benefit out of Wakefield Park for the future recreation of everyone within the Wellington Region.
Some Key Facts
Weather - Our annual rainfall is high - over 1,200mm every year!
Population - 95.8% of adults in 2008 participated in at least one sport or recreation activity, while 33.7% had been members of clubs/centres to participate in a sport or recreation activity.
In 2008, 64% of Kiwi adults, or 2,100,277 people, walked for exercise, while 19.6% (644,498) cycled. 26.6% (868,271) particpated in Equipment-based exercise and 17.6% (574,107) went jogging.
Participation is higher in children aged between 5-17 and 68% or 505,000 young people say they do at least 2.5 hours or more of sport and active leisure each week.
Sports Grounds - nearly one-quarter of Council sportsfields are on closed landfills with ongoing subsidence requiring careful management and monitoring. Many of the sportsfields are on clay-based soil and so have poor drainage, and traditional winter sports are now being played in summer, causing conflict between winter and summer codes over use and providing less time for ground preparation.
Football - We've seen an increase of 15% in senior players since 2004 (similar to junior increases), who all need fields. 5.5% of the country, or 185,292 adults (defined by Sparc and herein as being aged 16 or over) played football outside in 2008! 73,453 adults decided to play their football indoors instead.
