What's the current problem?

Wellington's grounds no longer support our increased population. The problem increases in Winter, when poor weather can constantly closes grounds.

What's the solution?

Artificial Grounds, using third generation (3G) turf technology & night lights can be used by many different groups, theoretically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 Days a year.

Why should it be Wakefield Park?

This initiative is focused on Wakefield Park because of many reasons, including its proximity to many suburbs, its size, its current condition, & it's ability to have staged upgrades.

Who does it benefit and why?

The proposal through the park & Pavilion upgrades will benefit numerous community groups, including social groups, football, walkers, runners, junior cycling...

How much will it cost, and who will pay?

Roughly $1.5 Million dollars per pitch. Estimates of the Pavilions cost are $2 Million. We anticipate WCC (Ratepayers Funds) will invest towards the Parks & Changing Facilites, (Nairnville Park's artificial park received a grant from the NZ Community Trust) & the Pavilion will need fundraising.

Aren't there any cheaper alternatives?

Not Really. "The estimated total cost of constructing & maintaining an artificial turf over a 10-year period is approximately twice that of a sand-based grass field. However, an artificial surface is able to cope with five to six times the usage of a typical natural grass field . The net cost per hour of use for an artificial surface is much lower than a sand/soil based field if this level of use is achieved." - WCC report.
